Ride Three
Steptoe Butte Ride
Travel time: 4 1/2 hours
Distance: 156 miles
MAP
Do you enjoy a great, twisty ride through the back county on great paved roads? Then this is the ride for you! Yes, there are turns, corners and sights to see. The old, small towns that we travel through will step you back in time. Rockford, Fairfield and Tekoa, Washington…to the top of Steptoe Butte, then home through Plummer and Worley, Idaho. Did I mention in Worley, Idaho has a Gambling Casino for those who are feeling a little lucky!
An old mountain of pink granite was buried in lava and the silt of floods. The rock that forms the butte is over 400 million years old, in contrast with the 15–7 million year old Columbia River basalts that underlie the rest of the Palouse. Its total elevation is 3,612 feet, approximately 1,000 feet above the surrounding countryside.
A narrow paved road winds around the butte, leading to a parking area at the summit. Popular activities, besides sightseeing, include hang gliding, flying kites and model airplanes flights. Not to mention a great Harley ride destination!
On a clear day you can see Mt. Spokane, located North of Spokane, approx. 90 miles away from Steptoe Butte.
Steptoe Butte is currently recognized as a National Natural Landmark because of its unique geological value. It is named in honor of Colonel Edward Steptoe.
Ride Four
White Pines Ride
Travel Time: 4 1/2 hours
Distance: 175 miles
MAP
The White Pine Scenic Byway passes through the lush forests of Idaho’s timber country and the numerous lakes and marshlands of the lower Coeur d’Alene River to the town of St. Maries, the Hughes House Museum, and other attractions. The byway then crosses the picturesque St. Maries and St. Joe rivers, the latter of which is the highest navigable river in the world.
The route continues on Idaho 6, meandering south through the St. Joe National Forest which boasts the largest stand of White Pine in the country. The byway winds through rolling hills of the Palouse region to the historic town of Potlatch, once the site of the largest white pine lumber mill in the world.
As we head home we will pass Worley, Idaho has a Gambling Casino for those who are feeling a little lucky! This is a wonderful back woods ride – bring a jacket in case the shady areas are a little cool.
Ride Five
Metaline Falls Ride
Travel time: 6 1/2 hours
Distance: 220 miles
MAP
The Postman was filmed here in 1997, directed and stared in by Kevin Costner.
Starting at Lone Wolf Harley Davidson Dealership we will pass through Rathdrum, Idaho. Rathdrum was settled in 1861 and in the late 1860’s, a pony express relay station was established here. Rathdrum is one of the oldest towns in North Idaho and has the oldest brick church in the state, Saint Stanislaus built in 1901. Just before Spirit Lake we will enter into an area called the Ice Box where the temperature is said to drop 10 degrees on the north side of Seasons Hill. Blanchard is next, and then Newport. Crossing over and then following the Pend Oreille River for approximately 70 miles we will arrive at the town of Metaline Falls which is just a few miles from the Nelway crossing of the Canadian/U.S. border. Metaline Falls was established in the early 1900’s as a mining and timber town. When those economies declined in the 1970’s, the community became a regional center for culture and art. It was voted one of the “100 Best Small Art Towns in America” in 1996 and is a winner of the Governor’s Award for small arts communities. Cutter Theatre in Metaline is on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Originally a school it was built in 1912 of locally-kilned brick and designed by Spokane's master architect, Kirtland Cutter. From the historic buildings, festivals and events to the seasonal Lion’s Club train ride the residents love the small-town atmosphere (as well as sharing it with byway travelers!). After lunch we will travel along the west side of the very scenic Pend Oreille River for our return to Coeur d’Alene.
Ride Six
Four Rivers Ride
Travel time: 4 1/2 hours
Distance: 234 miles
MAP
Going north from Coeur d’ Alene to the town of Sandpoint, then east along Lake Pend Orielle we will pass thru a wildlife bird sanctuary and the town of Hope Idaho. Our first stop will be in Clark Fork for fuel and a quick break. Continuing east along the beautiful Clark Fork River into Montana. We will head north passing the breathtaking scenery of the alpine setting of the cabinet mountains and the bull river valley. Once we head west we will connect up with the Kootenai River. The river wild was filmed here; we will arrive in Troy Montana stopping for lunch and fuel. Once we are refreshed we will continue west traveling along the Kootenai River into Idaho into Moyie Springs, and the Moyie River arriving in Bonners Ferry Idaho. Going south from here we will make our way back to Coeur d’ Alene.
Ride Seven
The Gold Rush Ride
Travel time: 6 1/2 hours
Distance: 250 miles
MAP
This ride will be taking us over Forth of July Pass (3,069 ft. elevation). In Kingston we follow the Coeur d’Alene River through very scenic country and past historic places. This is the region where gold was first discovered in the Coeur d’Alene mining district. Since 1884, this Mining District, has produced 1.2 billion ounces of silver -- more than Virginia City, Comstock Lode, Deadwood and all others combined…making it truly the SILVER VALLEY. Thompson Pass (6027 ft. elevation), our first stop, will give you a photo opportunity of the mountains and valley we just traveled through. Next we will head into big horn sheep country; every time we have been in this area we have seen at least one herd. On occasion we have also been treated to seeing bald eagles, deer, moose, and elk, so keep a look out for wild life…..they’re around. If you thought the Coeur d’Alene river valley was scenic wait until you see the vastness of Montana’s Lolo National Forest and the Clark Fork River areas. Next we will visit St. Regis, Montana; the geography of this town provides some of the most moderate temperatures in Montana, both summer and winter. The scenic beauty of the town nestled in the mountains is right out of a picture book. Heading west we climb to 4500 feet to Lookout Pass with the ski area that opened in 1935. Continuing on our way back, we will go through more mining towns like Osburn, Wallace, and Kellogg. Wallace is known for the fact that every downtown building is on the National Register of Historic Places…this is why in 1991 HWY 90 was completed going over them instead of through them. Kellogg is home to The Silver Mountain Ski Resort which includes Kellogg Peak (6300 ft) and Wardner Peak (6200 ft) and is accessed by taking the world's longest single-cabin gondola 3.1 miles from the town of Kellogg to the lodge at Kellogg Mountain. From here we are just 30 minutes from our starting point with many beautiful views of Lake Coeur d’Alene along the way.
